Miami Pop Festival

May 18 Music et al

May 18 – 19, 1968 – The first Miami Pop Festival. An estimated 100,000 people attended this concert, which was promoted by Richard O’Barry & Michael Lang.

From Wikipedia: The first Miami Pop event …was originally publicized on promotional materials as the “1968 Pop and Underground Festival,” and “The 1968 Pop Festival”. An estimated 25,000 people attended this event, which was promoted by Richard O’Barry and Michael Lang, later famous as promoter of Woodstock. Bands featured at the festival included The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Mothers of Invention, Blue Cheer, Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker and The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. The opening act on Saturday was a little-known group called The Package, and the closing act was The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Originally scheduled as a two-day event, Sunday’s concert was rained out. But there was at least one beneficial result – it inspired Hendrix to write “Rainy Day, Dream Away.”

Archie Bell and the Drells

May 18 – 31, 1968: “Tightin’ Up” by Archie Bell and the Drells #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

From Wikipedia: “Tighten Up” was written by Archie Bell and Billy Buttier. It was one of the first songs that Archie Bell & the Drells recorded, in a session in October 1967 at the Jones Town Studio in Houston, Texas, along with a number of songs including “She’s My Woman”. The instrumental backing for “Tighten Up” was provided by the T.S.U. Toronadoes, the group which had developed it[3] in their own live shows before they brought it to Archie Bell & the Drells at the suggestion of Skipper Lee Frazer, a Houston disk jockey who worked with both groups. At the recording session, the Drells worked late into the night with the Toronadoes as Archie Bell perfected the vocals.

Sha Na Na

Most Boomers have heard of Sha Na Na and remember their successful late 70’s TV show, but young visitors to the Museum at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts not only don’t recognize the name, they don’t associate the band with Woodstock. Hendrix, of course. Sha Na Na? Never heard of them.

Not many had heard of the band made up of Columbia University undergrads before that famous August 1969 weekend in Bethel, NY either. And most weren’t there to hear the band on Monday morning.

Sha Na Na was there, though. They “opened” for Jimi Hendrix, an acquaintance and apparently the person who punched their ticket to Woodstock.

Youngest @ Woodstock?

You can win some bar bets by asking who the youngest person to play at Woodstock was? Those who have an answer will often reply, “Santana’s drummer, Michael Shrieve.”

Country Joe McDonald boosts that belief dozens of times each day during the repeating movie in the entrance to the Main Gallery at Bethel Wood’s Museum.

McDonald is wrong. It’s Henry Gross, Sha Na Na’s guitarist (April 1, 1959), but Jocko almost made it as he was born on May 12, 1950. Shrieve is third youngest.

For five years after Woodstock, the band toured and then landed the aforementioned TV show. It had an eight-year run.

In 1978 they appeared in Grease, the wildly popular film adaptation of the rock’n’roll revival musical.

In addition to that movie, Marcellino has appeared in many others, including Rain Man. Check out his IMDB page.

May 1, 1966: The Beatles’ final scheduled live appearance in Britain. It was their fourth appearance at the New Musical Express Annual Poll-Winners’ All-Star Concert, which took place at the Empire Pool in Wembley, London. The Beatles performed before an audience of 10,000.

The group were on a bill which also included The Spencer Davis Group, The Fortunes, Herman’s Hermits, Roy Orbison, The Overlanders, The Alan Price Set, Cliff Richard and The Shadows, The Rolling Stones, The Seekers, The Small Faces, Sounds Incorporated, Dusty Springfield, Crispian St Peters, The Walker Brothers, The Who, The Yardbirds and Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich. The comperes were Peter Murray and Jimmy Savile.

The Beatles played a 15-minute set which included five songs: I Feel Fine, Nowhere Man, Day Tripper, If I Needed Someone and I’m Down.

Although ABC TV was filming the concert, Brian Epstein failed to reach an agreement over terms, so the cameras were turned off while The Beatles performed. The group was, however, filmed receiving their poll awards. (see May 16) (see Beatles last UK concert for more)

Lennon deportation

May 1 Music et al

May 1, 1972: Judge Bernard J. Lasker signed a temporary order in Federal Court restraining the Immigration and Naturalization Service from holding a deportation hearing for John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Judge Lasker ruled that the Government must first hold a hearing on a motion made by the Lennons before it takes up the matter of deportation. Lennon’s motion asks that they be classified as “aliens of distinguished merit and ability.” (next Beatles, see May 11; see Lennon for expanded story)
